Montclair State University’s student operated radio station, 90.3 WMSC FM, is a 2017 Marconi Award nominee for “Noncommercial Station of the Year”
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) announced earlier this month the finalists for the 2017 Marconi Radio Awards honoring radio stations and on-air talent for their excellence and performance in radio.
Along with WMSC, the other four nominees for the category of “Best Noncommercial Station of the Year” are KPCW-FM (Park City, UT), WRHU-FM (Hempstead, NY), WSDP-FM (Plymouth, MI) and WPSC-FM (Wayne, NJ).
The winners will be announced on September 7, 2017 at the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Dinner and Show held during the 2017 Radio Show in Austin, Texas.
“I am thrilled that Montclair State students who work at the campus station are being recognized for their hard work with this prestigious nomination. A Marconi is the ultimate award for radio, and they’ve worked extremely hard to raise the bar, particularly in our news and sports coverage,” said Anabella Poland, General Manager of 90.3 WMSC-FM, the Voice of Montclair State. “I’m so proud of them! Teamwork makes the dream work.”
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the campus station which has been a winner at the 2017 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards and a finalist at the 2016 New Jersey Broadcasters Association. WMSC was recognized by the College Radio Foundation for their work on College Radio Day 2016 and received the 2017 Golden Slipmat Award for their exclusive 24 hour marathon of vinyl-only music programming to celebrate Record Store Day.
“WMSC gave me such amazing opportunities to get hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment, programming, managing a large student staff and access to incredible events” said Juan Contla, student Station Manager 2016-2017 and member of WMSC since 2014. “From New York Comic Con to the White House or the Montclair Film Festival to political rallies and our coverage of the 2016 Presidential Election night, I worked them all, I learned a lot and I am grateful and honored to have been a part of this station. The Marconi nomination is just the icing on the cake; really yummy, gold leaves icing at that!"
