Department of Theatre and Dance Events Series for Fall 2016

The fall 2016 spring semester is abound with innovative theatre and dance productions that showcase the immeasurable talent of students in the Department of Theatre and Dance’s Theatre and Dance Series.

The semester opens with two performances from Hearts of Men, the intergenerational dance workshop that features men of all ages and backgrounds. To kick off the student production season in October, Theatre students present Aida, a stunning musical by Elton Jon and Tim Rice, based on Verdi’s opera set in ancient Egypt. The heartbreaking Iphigenia at Aulis by Euripides is a timeless classic that will captivate audiences in early November.  

Dance students continue to shine in Works-A-Foot with groundbreaking works by Montclair State faculty and guest choreographers such as 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient Camille Brown, and Mark Morris, “the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical,” as hailed by the New York Times.

In December, laugh-out-loud at The 25th Annual County Spelling Bee, where over-achieving youngsters compete in the cutthroat competition of a lifetime.

The Department of Theatre and Dance Studio Series begins with a production of Jon, based on the short story by George Saunders about teenage love in a corporate universe, where television commercials replace life experiences. The Studio Series allows students and faculty to study and present theatrical stagings that are freed from the constraints and cost of a fully produced event, and provide a laboratory for the exploration of theatrical performances, emphasizing acting as an art form. These performances are free to all students and the public.
