Spring 2016 Art Forum Celebrates the Visual Arts

Spring Semester 2016 brings with it a tremendous opportunity for students and community members to meet, greet and learn from working, visiting artists, curators, historians and critics, invited to campus through the Art Forum Lecture Series. Art Forum welcomes a diverse array of artist professionals to offer their unique perspectives on the creative process, philosophies of art, and the role of art in private life.

The series provides a forum (thus its name) where lecturers examine themes related to art and criticism in an atmosphere of open dialogue, fostering an unrestricted exchange of ideas and opinions.

The roster of notable artists presenting include artist, curator, and educator Riad Miah who kicks off the series on Jan 26, followed by professor Dr. Jonathan Harris of Birmingham City University who will examine post-colonial art political-economies around the world.

Artist Sama Alshaibi takes on the topic of art and beauty in her lecture in February, and the photojournalist, filmmaker, and educator Ed Kashi will discuss how his work documents social and political issues.

March features New York City and Bloomington, Indiana-based artist Blane De St. Croix who will speak about the geopolitical landscape and art.  Adjunct professor of painting Doron Langberg follows with his talk, “Finding Intimacy Between Abstraction and Figuration” and New York City-based art critic Ben Davis, author of 9.5 Theses on Art and Class, rounds out the month’s events.

April welcomes Argentinian artist Alicia Candiani, whose international artistic practice consists of expanded print and digital media work and who is currently a visitor professor at the Art and Design Institute in Shanghai, China. Curator and researcher Radhika Subramaniam whose work has dealt with urban crises and cultures of catastrophe comes to the Forum to speak about her diverse curatorial projects. Adjunct professor of painting Ali Miller will present the lecture “I don’t know what I’m doing, but I know how to do it,” on the methods of craft and practice.

Past Art Forum lecturers have included notables such as Chakaia Booker, Will Cotton, Aziz + Cucher, Inka Essenhigh, Judy Fox, Roxy Paine, Ursala Von Rydingsvard, and Seymour Chwast.
