Adjunct instructor Susan Skoog and Montclair filmmaking students participate in a discussion with Joel Stillerman, President of Original Programming and Development for AMC and Sundance TV.

On Sunday, December 6, the 2015 Behind the Screen series attracted a maximum-capacity audience to the Montclair State University campus.

For a fifth straight year, the event, which is co-sponsored by the Montclair Film Festival and the Film Institute at Montclair State, afforded students and community members alike, the opportunity to hear from industry professionals in producing, directing and editing for television and film.

This year’s program featured a master classes presentation by Michael Slovis, the acclaimed cinematographer and director of the shows Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, who discussed points from budget to scheduling, creative collaboration, and how every decision can have a meaningful and emotional impact on a scripted show.

Audiences were engaged during the full-day event which featured several classes on development, film editing, and producing, giving audiences an understanding of the processes of how films, film festivals, and television series take shape from inception to completion.

The partnership between Montclair State and the Monclair Film Festival spans throughout the academic school year, and gives students the opportunity to learn in depth about films and filmmaking from the world-renowned organization.

“The Behind the Screen program offers a tremendous learning resource for our community and it builds upon the ongoing work which the Film Institute at Montclair State and the Montclair Film Festival are each doing to promote the study and appreciation of filmmaking,” said Daniel Gurskis, the Dean of the College of the Arts at Montclair State University.

“The Montclair Film Festival is proud to partner with the Film Institute at Montclair State to bring these wonderful presentations to Montclair’s students, the Film festival members and the community at large,” stated Sue Hollenberg, education director of the Montclair Film Festival.
