Designed for College Bound Students and Teachers for Acting and Musical Theatre Programs for Summer 2015

Focusing on the rigors of the college audition process, The Department of Theatre and Dance introduces two college prep courses for Summer 2015 that will provide comprehensive, on-trend training to arts educators and all high school students interested in applying to any college or university Acting and/or Musical Theatre programs.  Emphasizing the disciplines of voice, acting, dance and movement, the intensive six day boot camp-style training workshops will help both college-bound students and the teachers who train them, to give them a competitive edge when presenting audition material through solid preparation and dedicated instruction.

The workshops give students and teachers the opportunity to learn with The Department of Theatre and Dance on the distinctive Montclair State University campus. With enthusiasm, the faculty and staff will guide students, helping them develop their talents and abilities as they take that crucial step toward studying at the collegiate level.

Within the Summer Intensive Students workshop, participants will work on selecting monologues and songs suited to the college audition process while showcasing their strengths and talents.  Methods on how to pick up a dance combination, head shot prep, as well as the nuts and bolts of developing a successful resumé will be covered with prominent industry professionals.  The workshop will be accepting 20 to 30 students who are considering a BFA and/or BA degree in either Acting and/or Musical Theatre at a college or university.

In the Summer Intensive Teachers workshop, educators will study independently from students, alongside workshop leaders on similar disciplines, while honing their instructional skills and learning the latest directing techniques and tools.  Teacher enrollment will call for 10 to 15 arts educators, where professional development credit hours will be granted.  To conclude the workshops, a small informal presentation for family and friends will be performed on campus at the end of the week.  The workshops will run from June 25th through July 2nd from 8:30am to 4:45pm.  Applications will be accepted through June 1st.

Due to the rise in applications to university performing arts programs The Department of Theatre and Dance is eager to extend the new intensive courses of study to both students and educators. "We are embarking on this new project to fill the professional development needs of secondary school theatre educators in NJ and to provide a network of peers and mentors as well as resources for teachers," says Professor Susan Kerner in The Department of Theatre and Dance. There has been unprecedented popularity within these programs and the College of the Arts is devoted to providing students and teachers of diverse levels, a distinguished arts education from preparation to degree-seeking study.
