Musical Theatre and Music Students Perform “City of Angels” February 6-9

A cast featuring actors from the Musical Theatre program in the Department of Theatre and Dance, joined by musicians from the John J. Cali School of Music, will present the award-winning City of Angels from February 6-9 at  Leshowitz Recital Hall.

City of Angels tells a dual story set in Hollywood in the late 1940s: one of a New York novelist struggling to adapt his book into a screenplay and, the other, of the film noir characters that live in his story. The show is a winking homage to melodramatic detective films of the era, complete with fedoras and untrustworthy, irresistible femme fatales. With an evocative jazz-influenced score and clever, snappy dialogue, it’s a unique combination of Broadway and Hollywood.

City of Angels swept the Tony Awards in 1990 when it won six awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. It also won eight Drama Desk Awards. It boasts an outstanding team of creators: Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity, The Will Rogers Follies, The Life, Barnum, Seesaw) wrote the score; David Zippel (Disney’s Mulan and Hercules) wrote the lyrics; and Larry Gelbart (TV’s MASH, the films Tootsie and Oh, God!, and A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum) wrote the book.
