Drawing

Overview

Drawing classes are offered within the Visual Arts (BA)

Drawing is a fundamental skill and, as such, is a core area of study for all art and design majors. The process and decision aspects of applying line to a surface is basic to virtually all aspects of art-making and is often the means through which artists record their initial ideas, as well as develop finished works.

Courses are designed to acquaint students with contemporary and historical uses of drawing in Western civilization as well as its application within other cultures.

Drawing helps students develop ways of documenting their world, describing their perceptions, and formulating/evolving thought processes. As all art mediums incorporate cutting-edge approaches and technology, drawing also has become interpreted in evolving ways. The coursework encourages experimentation with new materials and subject matter that reflect our changing world.

Drawing today is affected by virtual modes of representation and may be used to explore concepts related to areas such as animation and photography. Because it is a universal language with many applications, the process of learning to draw and thinking in graphic terms is integrated into all art and design classes, which enriches the potential for artistic production overall.

What You Will Study

Drawing courses are offered at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Upper-level courses, in particular, foster experimentation and invention. Students are instructed in all drawing techniques including use of line, tone, composition and linear perspective, as well as thematic content including portraiture, landscape, still life, narrative, figuration and abstraction. Through sequential coursework, students acquire the graphic skills necessary to produce studies for works of art in other mediums, as well as drawings as finished pieces in themselves. They are also exposed to classical and contemporary examples of drawing through visits to galleries and museums.
