Fashion student at NYFW

Montclair State University Art & Design students had the incredible opportunity to go behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week in February 2025, assisting renowned fashion designer Raul Peñaranda during his runway show.

This special opportunity was coordinated by Fashion Design adjunct professor Julie Panchu. Through Panchu’s industry connection, five MSU students were selected to work backstage and gain invaluable hands-on experience in the high-energy world of fashion production.

On the day of the show, students were paired with models and became integral to the fast-paced production, guiding them through styling, dressing, and accessorizing. From pairing jewelry with garments to assisting with hair and makeup coordination, students worked hands-on to help realize the final runway looks.

The backstage experience included unpacking and organizing dresses, shoes, and accessories, contributing to fittings, and learning firsthand how high-end fashion shows come together in real time. It was an invaluable opportunity to see their classroom skills put into action at one of the fashion industry’s most iconic events.

Participating students included Aiden Makepeace, Yamila Chege, Marcus Palainandi, Zuriel Vargas, and Ava Reinholt.

“Overall it was such a fun experience. I learned a lot and I’m motivated to work this summer so I can be back in this environment. Thanks so much for the opportunity!”

This unique partnership between Montclair State University and Raul Peñaranda continues to open doors for students looking to enter the world of fashion and design. It’s not just about learning fashion, it’s also about living it.
