Posted in: Announcements
Artist Julie Heffernan, Professor in the Department of Art and Design, celebrated the release of her debut graphic novel, Babe in the Woods, or the Art of Getting Lost, at Morgenstern’s Bookstore and Café on January 22, 2025. Known for her distinctive style of “ironic rococo surrealism with a social-satirical twist,” as described by The New Yorker, Heffernan brought her talent for storytelling to a new medium. This graphic novel, published on September 3, 2024, merges her visual artistry with a compelling narrative.
Babe in the Woods tells the autofictional story of a young artist named Julie who embarks on a transformative journey. Starting with a mountain hike alongside her infant son, the story takes a surreal turn as Julie delves into memories of her past, confronting personal challenges and artistic growth. Heffernan draws on her experiences as an artist and mother, weaving a poignant tale that blends reality with imagination.
With a career spanning over two decades, Heffernan has held more than 50 solo exhibitions worldwide. She believes that great artworks hold profound wisdom for those who engage with them deeply. “Great paintings are not to be ignored,” Heffernan said at the event. “They’re here to give us profound wisdom if we can read it, and how to read it is to look closely.” Her new graphic novel invites readers to do just that—explore, reflect, and immerse themselves in the story’s rich visual and emotional landscape.
