This summer, Montclair State University alumna Maria Valdivia and fellow MSU graduate Javian Pereira took a major step in their artistic careers by launching Studio Esq, an artist collective aimed at uplifting both visual artists and musicians. In August, they held their first pop-up event in partnership with ArtFRONT Galleries in Newark, creating a space where creativity, collaboration, and community came together.

Studio Esq was founded with the mission to provide emerging artists with valuable experience in the art world, building a network that fosters creative growth. The collective’s inaugural event was a testament to this mission. After months of preparation, the pop-up brought together artists, musicians, and art lovers for a night of immersive creative expression. “It was amazing to see people come together to enjoy both art and music,” Maria shared. “The event not only highlighted the importance of creative expression but also showed how art can connect communities. Seeing the turnout and the enthusiasm from attendees was a breath of fresh air — it definitely reaffirmed our belief in what we’re building.”

The event featured a blend of visual art and live music, offering a unique platform for musicians to perform in front of an engaged audience. Javian, co-founder of Studio Esq, highlighted the collective’s commitment to providing space for artists of all forms: “Maria’s idea of incorporating musicians in our showcase was genial! One of the biggest challenges for upcoming musicians is getting to perform for an active audience, one that’s there to stop, listen, and appreciate their work.”

Looking ahead, Maria and Javian plan to expand Studio Esq into a nonprofit organization. They envision offering resources, opportunities, and connections that empower artists on a deeper level. Maria, now pursuing her Master’s in Arts Administration at Rowan University, continues to develop her artistic practice. Recently, she participated in her first art show at Studio Montclair, where she was honored with Best in Show for one of her paintings and sold another. Her work is currently featured in the exhibition SALUDOS! From Our Neighbors at The Gallery Space in Rahway, celebrating Hispanic and Latin artists.

Maria credits her time at MSU and the Department of Art & Design as pivotal in her journey. “The education and support I received equipped me with the tools to take the first steps toward achieving my goals. The mentorship and guidance from my professors have been invaluable in shaping my artistic and professional growth.”

With Studio Esq’s promising start, Maria and Javian are eager to continue nurturing the next generation of artists and musicians, fostering creative collaboration and expanding opportunities for emerging talent.
