Event to honor Dr. “Coach” Cathy Paskert on January 30

On January 30, alumnae of the Women’s Basketball program will gather to cheer on the current team as they take on Ramapo College. At halftime, Dr. Catherine Paskert will be honored for her contributions to Montclair State. Following the game, a reception will be held in the Peter M. Altieri Hall of Fame Room. As part of the event, the Women’s Basketball team room will be dedicated in memory of Cathy.

A women’s basketball pioneer, Cathy served as the head coach of the Montclair State women’s basketball program from 1965-1974, spearheading its transition from club sport to varsity sport. During that time, Montclair State became one of New Jersey’s top women’s teams, winning the first ever New Jersey State Championship in 1971, and again in 1973 and 1974, along with five appearances in the Middle Atlantic Women’s Intercollegiate Regional.  

Cathy, who was inducted into the Montclair State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981, was also a professor for in the Departments of Physical Education and Health Professions for 25 years. Cathy was a proud supporter and donor to both the University and the Montclair State women’s basketball program. 

Cathy helped to create a strong foundation of success for women’s basketball at Montclair State. This success has been can be traced throughout the decades from the 1978 team, which finished third in the Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) tournament to the 2015 team, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
