University Announces New Colleges and Schools

In the coming year, Montclair State University will enhance its academic offerings to promote further student success and respond to current and future workforce needs.

Effective July 1, 2023, the College of Education and Human Services will be divided into two separate and distinctive entities: the College for Education and Learning, and the College for Community Health.

Ideally positioned to align with current trends and to adapt to future change, the College for Education and Learning will include Educational Foundations, Educational Leadership, and Teaching and Learning, and will also allow for the creation of new academic offerings to meet the evolving needs of our state and nation.

The College for Community Health will be designed to prepare the next generation of community health professionals to meet the imperative for health equity. It will include Counseling, Exercise Science and Physical Education, Family Science and Human Development, Nutrition and Food Studies, and Public Health. In addition the new college will include Communication Sciences and Disorders, currently housed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Also, effective January 17, 2023, the University’s new School of Computing, housed in the College of Science and Mathematics, will provide academic leadership, facilitate collaborations for computing and embody the vision of an academic unit without walls. It will strive to achieve its academic goals through effective programmatic integration with other units. It will also increase its research activity in basic computer science and selected computing areas in which computer science is a key, but not exclusive, component.

The School of Computing will house existing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics, with planning for new academic offerings underway. Constantine Coutras, current chair of the Department of Computer Science, will be the inaugural director of the School.
