Golfers help drive Montclair success
As a tradition that keeps getting better, the 10th annual Red Hawk Open welcomed a sold out field of golfers as it raised more than $110,000 for Montclair State University student athletes. As a tradition that keeps getting better, the 10th annual Red Hawk Open welcomed a sold out field
of golfers as it raised more than $110,000 for Montclair State University student athletes. Held Sept.
19 at Crestmont Country Club in West Orange, the outing drew 128 attendees for a day on the links
that included a BBQ lunch and dinner reception, along with raffles and prizes.
“I am happy to see the event grow to where it is today – the first time we have filled to capacity –
which is a testament to the excitement that is going on at Montclair,” says Robert Lieberman, who
serves on the Montclair State University Foundation board and regularly attends and supports the event.
Proceeds from the Red Hawk Open support the more than 500 student athletes and 18 varsity
athletic programs of the Montclair State University Athletic Department. This year’s proceeds will
continue to enhance the student-run and produced Red Hawk Sports Network (RHSN), as well as
provide upgrades to the Panzer Athletic Center locker room and the Panzer Fitness Center, where
having quality equipment is essential to all teams.
The RHSN support will expand use of its automated camera system to air games. The innovative
cameras have the unique ability to follow the action of the game using advanced auto production
algorithms without the need for a camera operator. This allows the cameras to automatically identify
highlights, create replays, and much more. It also automatically saves games to the cloud and can
stream it live or on-demand. This system of sports production is typically only seen in Division I
schools and professional sports. Support also will provide funds needed to increase student
participation in the program. Through the RHSN, sports communication majors at Montclair have a
unique opportunity to prepare for the professional world that many students across the country don’t have.
“The 10th annual golf outing was a tremendous success, we really appreciate the great support that
we receive from our alumni, friends and campus partners,” says Rob Chesney, director of
Intercollegiate Athletics. “The money raised continues to support all of our programs and enhances
the student athlete experience. It was great seeing new and familiar faces, and we look forward to
next year’s event!”
