On Tuesday, March 15 we will welcome our Honors Program alumni back to campus for the milestone 30th anniversary of the Montclair State University Honors Program. A celebration get-together will be held at the Feliciano School of Business Multipurpose Room from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and all Honors Program alumni are invited!

Conceived in 1985 by faculty who relished the stimulation of working with exceptional students, the Honors Program has produced graduates who succeed in every field of endeavor. Some of its alumni have gone on to study at Harvard, Yale and New York Universities, while others have gone on to careers as accountants, art scholars, writers, musicians, illustrators, social workers, business leaders, researchers and master teachers. It is worth noting that every Honors Program student who has applied to law school has been admitted.

“Now in its 30th year, the University’s Honors Program continues to attract the best students at Montclair State and offers an amazing array of liberal arts and sciences seminars each term,” notes Honors Program Director Gregory Waters. “In addition to our classes, we are really proud of the relationships that have been forged by our program, and the sense of community that has developed over the years.”

For those accepted into the Honors Program, the undergraduate experience offers an opportunity to work with distinguished faculty on advanced curricular, extracurricular and individual projects. It means greater opportunities for achievement, recognition and leadership, not only during undergraduate studies but in the years that follow.

“Being a part of the Honors Program as an undergraduate student was a wonderful experience,” says Alexandra Thelin Blackowski ’05, ’08 MA, web content manager for the College of Education and Human Services. “I got to meet so many great people, and the coursework prepared for me for future academic pursuits.”

Regardless of their specialties, passions or goals, our remarkable students found the resources they needed to grow and develop at Montclair State.

“The Honors Program shaped the beginnings of my academic career, and for that, I am forever grateful,” says Thelin Blackowski. “It will be nice to get together again!”

“Speaking for our faculty, we hope you will be able to join us on March 15 to see old friends and many of our professors, share some stories and learn more about the University’s plans for the future,” says Waters. “The dazzling new buildings will amaze you, but the heart of the Honors Program remains the same.”

The Honors Program is designed for academically ambitious students who have excelled in high school and are looking to take their college experience to a higher level. Honors Program students enjoy benefits such as participation in interdisciplinary seminars, early course registration, special housing with fellow Honors Program students, summer study at universities around the world and independent research, to name a few. We encourage you to visit the Honors Program webpage to learn more. Additionally, Montclair State is partnered with msny nationally recognized honors societies, both University-wide and for specific colleges, in order to recognize those students who excel academically.

“As a student in the Honors Program, I have been challenged intellectually and given opportunities that have molded my college experience. As a committee member for the 30th Anniversary Celebration, I have had the pleasure to hear first-hand from alumni how the program has impacted them after graduation,” says Marysia Garcia ’17.
