Conditional Admission to Teacher Education – Secondary Education (P-12)

In order to obtain teacher certification in Secondary Education (P-12), students enter Montclair State University with conditional admission to the program of Secondary Education (P-12). For full admission to this program, you must satisfy specific course and admission requirements.

In the first two years of study, you must satisfactorily complete the following prerequisite courses, with a minimum of a C- or better grade.

  • SASE 210 – Public Purposes of Education: Democracy and Schooling (Meets (L) general education elective; must have sophomore status or higher)
  • EDFD 200 – Psychological Foundations of Education (Meets Social Science general education requirement)

Or

  • PSYC 200-Educational Psychology or
  • FSHD 216-Adolescent Development
  • Nine (9) –Eleven (11) credits in your major coursework. Math majors must complete 11 credits including Calculus I and II, and a course that requires Calculus II as a prerequisite.

Additional admission requirements for the Teacher Education Program may vary by certification or degree program.  However, for full consideration at the time of application, applicants must show evidence of the following:

  • Passing standardized test score (ACT, SAT or Praxis Core)
  • Meeting of the overall minimum GPA requirement
  • Meeting of the minimum GPA requirements in the major
  • Demonstrated evidence of satisfactory written and oral skills

Acceptance into the Teacher Education Program will allow you to remain in this program.

Due to changing State of New Jersey requirements concerning teacher certification, we strongly recommend that you attend an information session or schedule an appointment with the Office of Teacher Education Admissions, Recruitment and Diversity to ensure that you are on track with your academic goals.
