Undergraduate Programs
BA in French, French Civilization Concentration
In the French Major, with a concentration in French Civilization, students choose coursework in the French language, enhance their written and spoken communication skills, and take related civilization and culture electives to complement their General Education requirements. We also offer the possibility of Study Abroad, for the academic year or with our summer program in Nice, France.
BA in French, French Civilization Concentration (Combined BA/MA)
The BA in French, French Civilization Concentration is also available as part of a 5-year program that culminates in a MA in French, French Studies Concentration. This program is scheduled to begin enrollment in Fall 2020.
BA in French, Translation Concentration
In the French Major, with a concentration in French Translation (39 credits), students choose coursework in the French language, enhance their written and spoken communication skills, and take related translation electives to complement their General Education requirements. Many of our translation courses offer an internship or other field experience. We also offer the possibility of Study Abroad, for the academic year or with our summer program in Nice, France.
BA in French with Teacher Certification in French (Preschool-Grade 12)
This program combines the required courses for the BA in French with those required for Teacher Certification in French for grades P-12. To meet the requirements for state certification in teaching French, students take 39 credits in the French program (language, literature, and culture of the French-speaking world), plus required coursework in Teacher Education. We also offer the possibility of Study Abroad, for the academic year or with our summer program in Nice, France.
BA in French (Combined BA/MAT with Teacher Certification in French (Preschool – 12) and Teacher of Students with Disabilities)
The Dual Degree Dual Certification program is an accelerated program that leads to teacher certification in French (grades P-12), teacher certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities, a baccalaureate degree and a master’s degree.
Minor in French
The Minor in French is an 18-credit program available to undergraduate students from any major. Students will take a combination of four required and two elective courses in Intermediate French, composition, conversation, Francophone Film and more. We also offer the possibility of Study Abroad, for the academic year or with our summer program in Nice, France.
Graduate Programs
MA in French, French Studies Concentration
The graduate program in French, concentration in French Studies, is increasingly useful for positions in government and industries concerned with French-speaking areas of the world. Admission is open to students who hold a bachelor’s degree and have completed at least 24 semester hours of undergraduate French or its equivalent. Students may also study abroad.
MA in French, French Studies Concentration (Combined BA/MA)
The MA in French, French Studies Concentration is also available as part of a 5-year combined BA/MA program that also awards students a BA in French, French Civilization Concentration. This program will be open for enrollment starting in Fall 2020.
MA in French, Professional French Translation Concentration
The Professional Translation Concentration of the 30-credit MA in French prepares students for careers as highly qualified translators in such critical industry sectors as health, law, business, media, and culture. As such, the program trains students seeking to develop the professional skills needed for translating from English to French and vice versa.
Professional French Translation (Certificate)
The Graduate Certificate in Professional French Translation prepares students for careers as qualified translators in such critical industry sectors as health, law, business, media and culture. The program trains students seeking to develop the professional skills needed for translating from English to French and vice versa. Our proximity to New York City and the metropolitan area’s vibrant pool of international industries, governmental organizations and media companies, among others, offers rich opportunities for professional networking and collaboration.
Instructional Certification – Subject Area Certification (Preschool – Grade 12)
This program is for students with a baccalaureate degree who are interested in teaching and wish to pursue Teacher Certification in French for grades P-12. To meet the requirements for state certification in teaching French, students take coursework in the French program (language, literature, and culture of the French-speaking world), plus required coursework in Teacher Education. We also offer the possibility of Study Abroad, for the academic year or with our summer program in Nice, France.
Teaching (MAT) with Certification in French (Preschool-Grade 12)
Students with a baccalaureate degree and interest in teaching may pursue the Post-BA program for certification only or the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) which simultaneously leads to certification and Master’s Degree.
