Profile
Christopher N. (Chris) Matthews a historical archaeologist and professor of anthropology at Montclair State University. He teaches courses on the anthropology of race, Native North Americans as well as historical and public archaeology.
His research focuses on the archaeology and history of marginalized and racialized communities in North America with a focus on the mid-Atlantic region. He is also a specialist in community-engaged research and teaching.
He is the author and editor of "The Archaeology of American Capitalism" and editor of "The Archaeology of Race in the Northeast" and "Archaeologies of Violence and Privilege." His most recent book, "A Struggle for Heritage: Archaeology and Civil Rights in a Long Island Community", examines how conflicting histories reinforce social and racial inequalities in both local communities as well as in professional heritage work.
He is currently working on projects in New Jersey focused on the historic African American community at Dunkerhook in Paramus, settler/slaveowner sites in Cedar Grove and Little Falls, as well as a project documenting features of a Native American ceremonial stone landscape in Sussex County.
