Dr. Tom Killian (he/him/his) is an Assistant Professor of Counseling in the Department of Counseling at the College for Community Health. He earned his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, with a minor in Applied Statistics and Research Methods, from the University of Northern Colorado. Dr. Killian also holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Mississippi. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with diagnostic privilege (LMHC-D) in New York, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey, and a National Certified Counselor (NCC).

With over a decade of clinical experience, Dr. Killian believes it is essential to maintain practical experience as an academic. He currently owns and operates a private practice in Montclair, where he works with individuals, couples, and families, and provides clinical supervision. His background includes working in university counseling and psychological services, a university athletic department, and a residential facility.

Broadly, his research interests include multicultural and social justice competency development within counselor education and practice, community-engaged research and evaluation in counseling, and LGBTQ+/queer issues within counseling.
