Profile
As the co-director of the Weston Science Scholars program, this pre-college research program is a partnership between the College of Science and Mathematics at Montclair State University with the Montclair Public schools. The Weston Science Scholars Program, now in its 19th year, offers specially selected, ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students the opportunity to learn science by "doing science." The program recognizes high achieving students with significant potential in science, mathematics and related fields.
The students are engaged in intensive mentored laboratory/field research over a five-week period during the summer, and will also study a mathematics component pertinent to their research. To further support their endeavors, scholars also participate in "hands-on" activities, lectures and field excursions that enrich their science and mathematics background.
Other non-research activities include guest speakers and field trips to several of the many science oriented sights in the tri-state area.
Additional required components include: 20 hours of community service, completion of a research abstract, and participation in laboratory techniques seminar. Scholars are also required to work with faculty from MSU's speech and language department to refine and sharpen language skills so students may communicate what they learn in a public forum.
Students are awarded 7.5 credits for completing the five-week research internship and the other program components, which includes spring and fall activities. The credits will be given based on participation and completion of supplemental assignments.
