Overview
The Bilingual Bicultural Education Endorsement program prepares teachers to work with P-12 English Language Learners and their families using strategies that support bilingualism, biliteracy and the learning of grade-level content across the curriculum. This 12-credit, non-degree graduate program is designed for candidates who already possess or are completing coursework leading to New Jersey instructional certification in either Early Childhood (P-3), Elementary (K-6) or Subject-Area (P-12) and wish to obtain an additional certification in Bilingual Bicultural Education.
The Bilingual Bicultural Education Endorsement program is available online and, in select circumstances, at off-site locations in the surrounding region. Courses for our traditional program are offered fully online; courses for off-site program cohorts are offered in a combined online and in-person hybrid format. All courses are held during late afternoon and evening hours to meet the needs of working students and individuals may complete the program in just one year.

Candidates must complete the following four courses (12 credits total):
- READ 520: Language Acquisition and Bilingualism
- ECEL 529: Sociocultural Foundations of Working with Bilingual Learners and Families
- READ 521: Literacy and the Bilingual Learner
- ECEL 527: Teaching Subject-area Content in Bilingual and Sheltered English Classrooms
Candidates will be recommended for state certification upon completion of the program. To obtain the certification, candidates will also need to submit evidence of passing scores on the Oral Proficiency Interview and Written Proficiency Test in English and their target

Applicants who are not currently matriculated in a graduate program at Montclair State will need to apply directly to the Graduate School. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in your most recent program of study is typically required for applicants who graduated after September 1, 2016 and 2.75 for those who graduated before that date.
