Communicative Methods for Communicative Approaches: Best Practices for Using Film in the Classroom
MATERIALS: Cinelezione Workshop and Cinelezione Bibliography
The workshop will be divided in the following ways.
- (15 minutes) The facilitator will begin the session by introducing (or reinforcing) current teaching and learning findings and practices with regards to the use of film in the language / culture classroom.
- (1.5 hours) Participants will have the opportunity to work with several teaching and learning activities brought forth during the introduction. The activities, centered on how to include film clips, full features, themes, character analyses, etc., in all levels of language instruction, are aimed at enhancing learners’ cultural perceptions as well as their language competencies.
- (15 minutes) The facilitator will incorporate throughout the session, and conclude with, examples of materials for in-class use as well as successful results of the activities that will be seen.
Teresa Lobalsamo is a Lecturer at the University of Toronto Mississauga. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in Italian Studies – her main specializations are Italian Cinema and Italian Cinema Pedagogy and her interests are firmly grounded in Teaching and Learning. Dr. Lobalsamo is dedicated to enhancing the students’ undergraduate experience through cinema; as such, she is presently working on releasing an Italian Film Studies workbook geared for use in an advanced Italian language course, as well as an online (open) film textbook for students of beginner Italian.
