The workshop, led by the co-founders of the prestigious Teatro delle Albe company (winner of 14 Ubu Prizes, the Italian “Oscars” for theatre), is designed for university and HS students of Theatre and Italian who are interested in theatre as an approach to the ‘stage’ dimension via the actor/actress/ voice and the text ‘incarnated’ in a body-voice. In using excerpts from Ariosto’s and Boiardo’s literary works, the workshop participants will investigate the relationship between the individual and the group on stage.
Introductory and closing remarks: Dr. Teresa Fiore (Inserra Chair) and Dr. Deborah Saivetz (Theater and Dance).
- Organized by the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies (Department of Spanish and Italian) at Montclair State University
- Co-sponsored by the Office of Arts and Cultural Programming and the Institute for the Humanities at Montclair State University
- In collaboration with the Department of Theatre and Dance at Montclair State University, and the Italian American Committee on Education (IACE) of New York.
- Special thanks to the Italian classes of the local high schools: River Dell, Paramus, and Parsippany Hills.
About Martinelli and Montanari
Marco Martinelli and Ermanna Montanari were among the co-founders of the Teatro delle Albe in 1983 and are both recipients of several Ubu Prizes, Italy’s most prestigious theatre prize assigned by critics. Martinelli is a playwright and director for the company (among his main works, Siamo asini o pedanti?, I Polacchi, La Mano, detto Molière, L’isola di Alcina, Leben, Pantani) and has also been the artistic director of the Ravenna Teatro Center since 1991. A published author and essayist, Martinelli is the director of the non-school, a high school theater project that reaches 400+ students a year.
Montanari, “an experimenter of the possibilities and power of the voice”, has been active in the company as an actress, an author, and a stage designer (among her memorable roles, Madre Ubu in I polacchi and the magician in L’isola di Alcina). The recipient of prestigious prizes (Ubu and Eleonora Duse), she has also published her own plays and essays. Since 2011 she has worked closely with Chiara Guidi of the Socíetas Raffaello Sanzio, a company that has performed at the MSU Kasser Theater. Both Martinelli and Montanari are the subjects of monographic critical works: Laura Mariani’s 2012 Ermanna Montanari: fare-disfare-rifare nel Teatro delle Albe and Francesca Montanino’s 2006 interview-overview Marco Martinelli.
