MICHAEL PEROFF, filmmaker/producer presenting The Shanghai String Quartet: Behind the Strings
When Mao’s Cultural Revolution ended, China’s door cracked open. Four young, classically-trained musicians seized the opportunity to flee to the West. They've performed for 35 years in the U.S. and around the world. Behind the Strings tells how they got there, and the price they pay to stay on top.
Michael is the executive producer, producer, and co-writer of Behind the Strings. He and cinematographer, director, and co-writer Hal Rifken are the “creators” of this documentary film about the Shanghai Quartet.
Michael started his career in the advertising industry with several global advertising agencies, The Leo Burnett Company, J. Walter Thompson and Bozell Worldwide. Michael then co-founded a TV production company in China. His company, Stone Bridge International, created and produced weekly, primetime programming for China Central TV (CTV), Beijing TV (BTV) and Shanghai TV (STV).
