Dmitri Kasterine has photographed numerous cultural figures of the 20th century from Edward Albee to Johnny Cash, Roald Dahl (1976) to Mick Jagger, David Hockney (1974) to Rudolph Nureyev. His work was on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London during the winter 2010/11. The Smithsonian has recently acquired five of his portraits.
Born in 1932, Kasterine was educated at Radley College, Oxfordshire.
He began his professional career as a photographer in 1961, working for publications
such as Queen and The Daily Telegraph Magazine.
He had a long association with Stanley Kubrick taking stills on Dr Strangelove (1964),
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971).
In 1986, he left Britain to move to the United States, which he had first visited on
an assignment to photograph Mick Jagger in Los Angeles for Radio Times.
Dmitri Kasterine has produced the personal photographic survey England and the English (1981).
Newburgh: Portrait of a City was published in September 2012 by The Quantuck Lane Press, an affiliate of W.W. Norton & Co.
