Abstract
Physicists are making a substantial effort to not only understand quantum systems as they appear in nature, but to see how far artificial quantum systems can be engineered. For example, scientists are working to develop quantum systems that perform computations more quickly or make measurements more precisely than their classical counterparts. In this talk, I will focus on engineering states of light that permit more precise measurement of optical phase than is allowed classically. I will introduce light as a quantum phenomena and explain how we make an experiment that measures optical phase better than the standard quantum limit.
